This three mile stretch of sand runs from Falmouth Harbor west and southwest all the way to the shadow of Nobska Lighthouse, and most of it is open to the public. There are three public parking lots — the first is at the end of Shore Street, walking distance from Main Street in Falmouth where you will find all the shops and restaurants. This is also where daily and annual stickers can be purchased for all other beach parking in town. In summer, a day pass to Falmouth parking is $10 and can also be purchased at the front desk of your local B&B. There is also public parking for Surf Drive Beach at Walker Street and Trunk River.
Another great way to get to Surf Drive Beach is to take the Shining Sea bike path which runs eleven miles from Woods Hole to North Falmouth. For a section of this charming bike path, you are riding right along Surf Drive beach near Trunk River. This is a great excursion from you local B&B to explore Falmouth beaches. The Captain Kidd is a famous old-school bar down in Woods Hole which closed this winter for a thorough renovation, re-opening this week to great reviews and happy customers in the beautiful old barn-like space on the waterfront in Woods Hole. With nautical themed banquettes, great wall art including the old sign for the famous “Leeside” (now just a memory but once owned by this family), and a dock filled with tables for dining al fresco, the Captain Kidd is the new place to be in Woods Hole.
Summertime favorites like steamed lobster, oysters on the half shell, baby back ribs with mac and cheese, fresh salads and much more define this fresh take on classic Cape Cod fare. Especially attractive is the enamelware pot for the tableside presentation of steamed lobster – Adorable.
On opening night, guests packed every nook and cranny of the bar/restaurant, with people clustered along the waterfront tables enjoying the sunset over the Eel Pond. With many seats spread over several areas and a central kitchen, the delicious food was coming out steadily and the hum of happy customers was filling the room.
While parking in Woods Hole can be challenging, your local innkeeper will help you with several proven strategies — there is parking on Water Street on weekends in the lot next to Coffee O, at the Fisheries and in the MBL lot next to the Eel Pond. All three locations are easy walks to the Captain Kidd. There are also over 100 metered spaces in Woods Hole, and the meters are free after 6 pm.
Another way to get to Woods Hole in summer is to take the WHOOSH trolley from Main Street, or hop the Palmer Ave bus which connects the Steamship Authority parking lots to the ferry terminal. The WHOOSH costs $1 and the Palmer is free. Note that both stop running about 10 pm but Falmouth Taxi will take you home after that. The taxi stand is in front of the ferry terminal.
Finally, many people bike the three miles to Woods Hole on the safe Shining Sea Bike Path. Grab a flashlight from your innkeeper for the ride home.
