Artist Lance Shinkle, a long time Falmouth Mass resident, carved and painted the incredible horses for this carousel which also is covered with beautiful paintings of favorite Falmouth activities like jumping of the Menahaunt Bridge, walking the Knob and Nobska Lighthouse.
Each horse is assembled like a butcher block with white pine from the Cataumet Sawmill, then sculpted first with a chain saw, then chisels and finally sandpaper. Mr. Shinkle carved and hand-painted this incredible collection over 20 years ago. What a life’s work! This is the first summer it has been up and running as a real carousel in Falmouth.
Located right near Falmouth’s charming Main Street in front of the Mullen Hall School, the Carousel of Light offers fun for all ages in the summertime. The Carousel will be closed up for the season in late August so hurry over for your late summer ride. Hopefully, the Carousel will find a more permanent location in Falmouth in the near future!

August is all about the Falmouth Road Race here in Falmouth, MA on Cape Cod. This race started over 40 years ago as a bar bet between a popular bartender and a few pals, and has grown into one of the most important summer races in the US.
This year there were about 11, 000 entries including elite runners from all over the world that use the 7 mile course to qualify for the New York Marathon and other races. With significant prize money on the table and one of the most beautiful courses in America, what’s not to like about the Falmouth Road Race?
Falmouth comes together the day of the race with the course lined with spectators. The seven mile course starts in Woods Hole at the drawbridge and goes past Nobska Lighthouse, along Surf Drive, past Falmouth Harbor ending in Falmouth Heights near the British Beer Company, a popular local watering hole (and birthplace of the race so many moons ago).
This year was sunny but not too hot and the race went off without a hitch. Planning to come next year either as a runner or spectator? Book your B&B now, as the popularity of this weekend is supreme.
