Lob-stah on the Lawn Banner
We know that summer has arrived when we hear the lobsterman’s bugle blowing on Monday evenings on the spacious Saint Barnabas lawn.

Lob-stah Bugle

Lob-stah Bugle

The bugle is played by a very energetic gentleman who is dressed in Bermuda shorts, a top hat and a lobster suit. He beckons one and all to join him for a fine feast of lobster rolls and chips on a warm summer’s evening.

Liam Maguire’s Irish Pub Features Great Food and a Relaxed Atmosphere

Liam Maguire's Irish Pub

Liam Maguire’s Irish Pub

We went to Liam’s a recently. Falmouth is home to the one and only Liam Maguire’s Irish Pub. Established in 1994 by Liam and Deborah Maguire, the pub quickly became a local favorite and, of course, the center of celebrations on St. Patrick’s Day.

The entertainment at Liam’s features regular bands, Irish music and quiz nights year round. Our bartender this evening was Rory, he is 6’6? and is Liam and Deb’s older son. He makes the best Irish coffee – not too bitter, not too sweet, and just the right kick.

The Menu

The menu at this Cape restaurant includes all the favorite pub grub you expect from Nachos and Potato Skins, to Fish & Chips and shepherd’s pie. They also feature a few twists on old favorites like Gaelic Grilled Cheese and Grilled Salmon Sandwiches. Whenever my daughter comes to visit she insists on stopping by for a pint and a bowl of beef stew. The restaurant has delicious “sweet potato fries” and we really like the “Irish egg rolls.”

“I had my first prolonged contact with the sea at Woods Hole. I never tired of watching the tidal currents pouring through the Hole – that wonderful place of whirlpools and eddies and swiftly racing water.”    – Rachel Carson

Rachel Carson Memorial

Looking out on Woods Hole Passage.

Earlier this month a new bronze memorial statue was unveiled at Waterfront Park in the Woods Hole section of Falmouth. The statue depicts Ms. Carson sitting on a bench while comfortably resting her back against a wooden piling. She gazes out over the waters of her beloved Woods Hole Passage.

In the late 1950’s Ms. Carson began to devote all of her energies to conservation, with an emphasis on environmental problems. In 1962 she published “Silent Spring” the book that is widely credited with launching the environmental movement. Although “Silent Spring” was met with strong opposition from chemical companies, it inspired a reversal in national pesticide policy, which led to the nationwide banning of DDT and other pesticides and inspired a grass roots environmental movement that led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Ms. Carson was awarded the presidential medal of Freedom by President Carter.
